About the authors Matt Kenney – Watertown, Connecticut A teacher of philosophy before he started working as an editor at Fine Woodworking, Matt Kenney started building furniture as a hobby. His first big project was a crib for his daughter constructed on a 2 ft. by 10 ft. apartment balcony. Then Matt met Joe Mazurek, a professional furniture maker in Camden, SC., who, according to Matt, “taught me almost everything I know about the craft.” Hank Gilpin – a Connecticut native Hank Gilpin has been designing and building fine art furniture for 30 years. A graduate of Boston University with a degree in photojournalism, he served in Vietnam as an army photographer. He was introduced to woodworking by Tage Frid at the Rhode Island School of Design. Hank is best known for the traditional, sturdy benches he builds in his home shop – a converted church.
