Why would you spend a lifetime learning to build furniture by hand, when machine-made furniture is perfectly adequate? For master furniture craftsman Gary Rogowski, the answer is that the discipline of working with one’s hands to create unnecessarily beautiful things shapes the builder into a more complete human being. In the tradition of “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” and “Shop Class as Soulcraft,” Rogowski’s “Handmade” is a profound meditation on the eternal value of manual work, creativity, human fallibility, and the stubborn pursuit of quality work. Rogowski tells his life story of how he became a craftsman and how years of persistent work have taught him patience, resilience, tolerance for failure, and a love of pursuing beauty and mastery for its own sake. Part autobiography, part guide to creativity, and part guide to living, “Handmade” is a book for craftspeople, artists, and anyone who seeks clarity, purpose, and creativity in their work … and the perfect antidote to a modern world that thinks human labor is obsolete.

In today’s artisan, hands-on, and environmentally conscience landscape, there are many reasons to harvest your own lumber: you can access new species and unique cuts of wood; you can save a healthy log from the landfill by finding it a useful purpose; and there’s a pleasing symmetry in building a toy for a grandson from the branch that held his daddy’s tire-swing. Plus, harvesting your own timber will save you a few bucks. A concise guide for the small shop or enthusiastic hobbyist, Harvest Your Own Lumber covers all of the important steps in the conversion of wood. John English takes the reader from selecting the raw material to the final drying of the harvested timber. All of the steps in between are explained in clear text accompanied with photographs and charts that make the process of harvesting your own lumber a guaranteed success. The process of harvesting your own lumber is much more than just felling the tree and sawing it into usable boards. You must consider which species of tree will produce quality timber; how to safely fell the tree; and how to dry and mill the log into usable lumber. Harvest Your Own Lumber explains and illustrates the various choices available from what types of grain pattern to expect to the many defects to be aware of. Also included is an extensive chapter on chain saws and safety while felling trees. Harvest Your Own Lumber also provides detailed information on sawing to grade — that is, how to get the best yield with the specific grain — plus useful information on humidity and wood, kiln and air drying, various types of kilns and milling rough boards to get them flat and straight. Harvest Your Own Lumber is a must-have handbook for any woodworker, builder, carpenter, or craftsman that relies on good quality wood.

Stephen H. Provost Before it was a modern freeway, California’s State Highway 99 was “the main street of California,” a simple two-lane road that passed through the downtowns of every city between the Mexican border and the Oregon state line. “Highway 99: The History of California’s Main Street” turns back the clock to those days when a narrow ribbon of asphalt tied the state’s communities together, with classic roadside attractions and plenty of fun along the way. “Highway 99” documents the birth, growth, and transformation of the highway; the gas stations, motels, restaurants, and attractions that flourished and declined by the roadside; and the communities, personalities, and historical events that made their mark on the highway. From the migrations of the Dust Bowl to the birth of the Bakersfield Sound to the foundation of America’s fast-food culture, the history of California has happened around Highway 99, and “Highway 99: The History of California’s Main Street” brilliantly depicts that history.

Working wood with hand tools is one of the most satisfying, relaxing and rewarding activities available, and adding planes to a woodworking regimen augments it in several ways. When we plane the face or edge of a board, we slice across cells, exposing a multitude of voids. When we sand, we fill up those voids with dust, the residue of crushed cell walls. As a finish is applied, the difference is immediately obvious. A planed surface has a deep, rich, translucent quality that is missing in a sanded piece. This is a book for the average woodworker of every skill level (except for the very advanced) a simple, straightforward shop manual for people who own a few bench planes and would like to know how to use them. This book dispenses with the lore and legend of planes, and treats them simply as tools while still preserving their dignity. The book contains how-to photography that is in step-by-step support of the text. Each image visually represents hard facts that are alluded to in the text. For example, a page on sharpening an iron will show the reader four images that illustrate flattening the requisite area of the back; grinding a primary bevel; honing a secondary bevel; and testing for sharpness.

Manual Training Toys for the Boys Workshop was originally published in 1912. After a short introductory section on basic woodworking and shop tools, the book offers 42 shop projects. Each project comes with a cutting list and dimensioned drawing, and all date from the early part of the 20th century (many, no doubt, are from the 19th century). Many of these projects are toys that require some skill in woodwork but they are not too difficult for boys and their dads to do together. When the book was first published it was dedicated to the boy who likes to tinker round, so it was really written with the thought that the boys could make these projects without adult supervision. Many of the projects would now be considered nostalgic reminders of a time when things were much simpler and boys were trained to use tools and make things that would be at times useful, and always entertaining. This was a time long before text messaging and video games. Projects include a Fourth of July or New Years eve rattle, a cannon that shoots marbles, a kite string reel, a pop-gun and whistle, a bow and arrow, a sword, a magic box, and 35 other fun things for boys to build.

The author always provides a broader perspective to stimulate creativity so that readers are encouraged to take the techniques beyond the specific instructions, use their imaginations, and make the art their own.Audience: Woodworking home hobbyists.
